As we progress through
the concept of sound the children moved on to investigate with drums. Last week they showed an interest in testing
the sound of surfaces, to extend their thinking this week they looked at three types of drums: a large, medium,
and thin and small drum. The children
used drum sticks to test out the sound on each of these drums. They incorporated the concept of volume into
this activity by changing the force with which they hit the drums. To create a loud sound they hit hard and to
create a quiet soundthey hit softly.
To expand on their
thinking I can create an activity in which the children try to create sound
without the drum sticks. The purpose is
for them to use other materials such as their hands or other tools to make the
sound.
