Pretend Baking Exploration

Dramatic Play Exploration with Baking

Week of February 10, 2014

To continue our exploration of food and restaurants this week, I brought in a variety of materials used for baking.  The children enjoyed exploring with cupcake pans, oven mitts, measuring cups, and mixing spoons.  Children filled the big bowl with various play food and enjoyed collaboratively mixing the ‘cupcakes’ with each other.  They also liked wearing the oven mitts.  They showed some understanding that we wear them while cooking something hot.  I also observed children place their cupcakes in the ‘oven’ to bake.

Children really enjoyed taking on the role of a baker during dramatic play in the kitchen area this week.  I think children would really find interest in actually baking something.  During a group time activity this week, children voted on which type of food they would actually like to bake.  Their options were cookies, cupcakes, and cake.  The majority of children decided they wanted to bake a cake.  Next week, children in this learning group will be mixing ingredients together, filling cake pans, and taking a tour of the ECEC’s kitchen to bake a real carrot cake!  I think children will really appreciate eating this treat for snack as it is something they will be contributed to.
