Roles: Babies
Feeding Babies
Week of February 10,
2014
This week we explored
feeding the babies with lots of materials. The children were very excited to
have many items to use to feed the babies, they enjoyed using the bottles,
bibs, bowls, and spoons for feeding. All the children were acting out feeding
the baby and were being very gentle while feeding. I asked the children ‘whose
job is it to feed the baby?’ and it was fifty-fifty between ‘mom’ and
‘themselves’. I feel that the children have mainly been fed by their mothers
and have seen mothers feeding babies. The children who said they were
responsible for feeding their babies are speaking on their actions. At this age
children are very egocentric and that is a great way to be when engaging into
dramatic play. They were the ones doing the feeding so it was their job. I also
noticed the children were holding the babies in a caring way. I feel the
children are becoming more aware on how to care for a baby and enjoy talking
about what exactly they are doing.
While engaging in the
activity the children spoke a lot about mothers feeding the baby, on one child
include daddy. Another topic that came up was what else can we do with the
baby, and a few children said the babies need to play. Our next activity will
be reading books and playing with the babies. I feel this activity will
strengthen literacy skills and promote conversation about other people who take
on roles as caregiver of babies.
