Exploring Family Roles: Grocery Shopping!

Week of March 10, 2014

This week we explored going to the grocery store. The grocery store was set up in the hallway and there was a variety of food for them to “buy” and bring back to the classroom. The children came two at a time into the hallway and were very excited to see the shopping cart. They took turns pushing the cart to and from the “grocery store”. When the children saw all the grocery’s they were looking through everything contemplating what to “buy” for the classroom. After much thought items were gathered. The children knew we had to pay for the grocery’s and then bag them up before going back to the classroom. Some of the children held the bags and others put them in the cart. When we got back to the classroom all the children were happy to share what they had bought with others in the class. The children put the groceries away and some started to play in the kitchen area cooking, and serving others.

We have explored a lot with the mother role in the family and touched on the father role. In the upcoming week we will be looking at various jobs in the home, such as cleaning, gardening, taking the trash out and much more. We will be looking at books where the children can see many jobs in the home. We will match jobs with family member in the home. This will help the children understand their role in the home and motivate them to help others with job they may not have though they could complete alone.
