Stationary Tubes
The implementation of the sixth inquiry
involved children expanding on their exploration of the big idea "Where
did it go?" The children wanted to study the motion of the marbles going
through stationary tubes. The children explored and investigated the stationary
tubes by rolling marbles through them. They noticed that the marbles get stuck
in the middle of some of the tubes. They noticed that some of the tubes move
and so they tilted the tube to get the marble out. The children also tested how
marbles travel faster through shorter tubes than they do through longer tubes.
Most children liked exploring the stationary tubes, while other preferred to
explore other tubes from previous activities.
Some concept the children learned during this activity include the
concept of motion, cause and effect, and directionality.
